The answer is: YES IT CAN. I have been a voice coach for 20+ years but in the last 10 years my approach has changed. I am an empath and feel the heaviness of others, I feel and see the trauma before it is verbalised, I often know how much it's affected them before they do. My own experiences of trauma meant that I had to rebuild my vocal and physical stability and learn more about the impact it has on our bodies,which is why it made sense to work with the awareness of the body and mind. My holistic approach helps others to understand the tension that is held in the body and the direct impact it has on the voice just as hormonal changes, lack of physical rest ( sleep), burn out and stress can. The heightened tension compromises our physical stability and alignment of the body which is important for voice production. The" Power Nap" Sometimes sleep patterns may become irregular due to things such as hormonal changes,stress,insomnia,other illnesses and imbalances. 2023 is almost done. Tomorrow we begin a whole new year! Looking back on some of the great memories of this year I always take time to reflect on what I have achieved. This isn't blowing my own trumpet ,it's allowing myself to acknowledge what I have created and continue to create; Understanding my purpose, understanding my connection and service to others and most importantly myself. There are incredible memories from this year, and I'm able to look at the communities we are building, and the solid connections being established. People are growing, changing, inspiring others, but let's not forget that through all of this greatness we had to grow through pain and hard times, it wasn't always an easy road. It took self reflection and deep work. There's still growing and learning to do, it never stops. Reflection is a wonderful thing. The importance of being heard and seen is underrated. It's so important to share space, time and energy with others. It's important to have a physical presence which is why I work openly, we discuss, we feedback, there's a large degree of student teacher learning but it's not one size fits all and it's important that you are aware of what we're focusing on. Learning styles vary, communication and understanding varies between people, feedback energetically and verbally is important. I like my students and clients to ask questions. If you're unsure ask, if we need to break it down ask, if we need to go into visualisation ask. How do we learn if we can't ask? There's no judgement we don't all process the same! I have preferred ways of learning too! I fully understand that to be heard and seen brings a better outcome to those I work with. Not forgetting the laughter which is also hugely important 😃. It's that time again when I get to show off one of my students. This is Josh and he's been on an incredible vocal journey. He's constantly working hard every week. When Josh first came to me, pitch and vocal control were his biggest struggle. Being consistent was difficult, his delivery was suffering along with the confidence in his ability. We focused on various exercises, isolation work and ear training. Since then he's gone on to perform in front of an audience and no longer requires the support of guide tracks, his awareness has changed, his vocal ability has gone from strength to strength. It wasn't easy for josh to get here, it took time, dedication and focus. He's now able to pitch correct and enjoy the sound he is making. Josh is now in a place he didn't think he'd get to. Yes Josh! Today just became heavy, these words will never explain the impact this incredible man had on me and the world. His "Dub poetry" his incredible books and legacy will always remind me of meeting him as a child. Benjamin Obadiah Iqbal Zephaniah from my home town of Birmingham will have shocked so many by the news of his passing. His Anti Racism Activism was heard through his music , personal experiences were written in books. He was an incredible man and I was incredibly lucky to hear his poetic sounds and powerful words in person not long ago. This is so sad and a huge loss for communities and the world. Remember your time is precious here on earth , don't waste it by worrying about things that don't need to consume you. Reach out to those you love and miss, drop the ego because his ending was fast and we know he had more to give to the world. Dreams can come true! 2 years ago , We made this young woman's dream come true, after a plethora of events that suddenly unfolded in her life.There was always a dream to sing a song that provided freedom before her accident. It was an absolute Joy to work with her. I saw the passion in her eyes , the hunger to get on stage and perform her chosen song, live. Luckily I know some people 😁 and organised a rehearsal for her with a live band. That's not all! That rehearsal then led to a live performance! Determined to go out there without her wheelchair, she stood and performed like a pro! She nailed it! The excitement and happiness on her face is a moment I won't forget. This was a moment she won't forget! She pushed through the boundaries, she ignored the noise, negativity and limiting beliefs and continued to rise. If you choose to give up then how are you going to know what is waiting for you!

You don't have to be stuck with these feelings. Would you believe me if I said there's a way out? Well there is, and it's through mindset change. When we understand how much of an influence the subconscious mind has over us and its ability to create thought distortions, we then start to understand possible patterns and triggers that pose blocks. Some people may say "just get on stage, you'll be fine", well that doesn't work for everyone! When you feel like you've been going round in a vicious circle it can be hard to break the cycle, but I'm here to tell you it CAN be broken. The amount of performers that I work with who have told me they never thought they'd be performing again, never thought they'd have the confidence, or the ability to get back out there or to even begin. These performers are now smashing it not just on stage and screen but in life and it's awesome to witness! Nerves are normal. Fear and anxiety may sit deeper and require working through, but if you have a deeper knowing that you feel good when you sing, focus on that. Close your eyes and sing for you, sing from your soul and feel the connection within. You can override the subconscious mind with positive visualisations of the realities and outcomes you desire along with cognitive tools. Close your eyes and visualise yourself on stage.. hear the audience cheer and support you, absorb the feeling you want to feel within the body so that the signals between the brain and body are in alignment. Stand / sit with that feeling. The negative thoughts may want to come rushing in but you're strong enough to knock them out of the way. Ways to help control Stage performance anxiety. Preparation ( know the piece inside out) Keep your surroundings positive Meet your basic needs e.g. Sleep Hydrate Fuel your body in a healthy way that works for you. Be in the present moment. Perform your piece in front of others and ask for constructive feedback. Time management ( leave plenty of time to get to your destination, rushing will only add unwanted stress and tension). This week Marks 25 years of my debut on the main stage. The world of Musical Theatre had grabbed me with both hands from a young age I felt at home there. This propelled me into further development. Drama School! These were some of the best moments and most incredible memories. Rewind several years.. if I told you I was so scared to sing in front of people let alone perform would you believe me? Well it's 💯 true! I used to mime at school, If I knew anyone would catch me singing I'd be devastated. Devastated that someone might say it was awful or think I was showing off. It took time and growth to understand my emotions around it, it was deep and sadly I didn't have a teacher who could relate on that level or help me come to my own realisations when it was needed. No filter needed on this bad boy! Why? Because this is my face and I like my face 😃. Your face can change through different expressions and thought processes, your face can change when there are hormonal changes within the body, when you eat something you dislike etc 😖 Sometimes we're not even aware of our facial expression when others are around us. What has this got to do with singing? Singing and performing are physical actions. It's ok to show expression ( I know some find it difficult to do this) through the emotions we feel, this not only shows that we understand the context of the piece we are performing but it allows us to connect with the part we are playing or singing . Your audience will feel connected to you and pulled in by your confidence as you take them through their own journey of emotions. All Art is a form of expression and sometimes we may want the audience to feel what we're feeling or sometimes we want the audience to just feel 'something', but allowing them the opportunity to feel something comes from what you're feeling and doing. Sometimes we've got to acknowledge the work that goes on behind the scenes. Alongside coaching my clients, running a choir, workshops , recording and holding down a household. I've accomplished something I'm so very proud of; Achieving my L3 counselling qualification is something I didn't think I'd have time for, or the brain power for. I was spinning many plates but knowing the outcome was only going to benefit myself my family and my clients, helped maintain my focus. What a fabulous write up! Absolutely well deserved to all students. We worked hard on this solidly from October 22. Fast forward to two sold out performances in April. It's the first Musical the school had put on in 8 years. The students got to experience performing on stage with a professional band and had the time of their lives. Confidence grew throughout the months of us working together and what they'd come together to achieve was incredible. Well done everyone involved. How I try to start my day before opening up the studio. This morning it got me thinking.. As a society we need to be grateful for what we have and less focus on what we don't. The world is a competitive cycle and we can get sucked up in it if we allow ourselves, but it's also a choice; you can choose to be envious of someone and their life and achievements or you choose to add to your life and succeed in your path. Nothing comes from sitting, waiting and wishing, but a lot happens when you get up, do and create.
